Doomben Cup - 2000m, Doomben R7

When it comes to WFA tests over 2000m, Melbourne has the Cox Plate and Sydney has the Queen Elizabeth, which are two of Australia’s very best races. The Doomben Cup isn’t at the level of those, but it is the Brisbane equivalent, and we have an excellent field assembled this year.

Zaaki is the headline horse, and even money favourite. Most will remember his seven length demolition job in the 2021 Doomben Cup – he’s only finished out of the placings once in 17 starts since that win, and that was fourth in last year’s Cox Plate when beaten just over a length. He’s a four time Group 1 winner, alongside an All Star Mile victory, and you know what you’re going to get from him every time.

Zaaki was excellent upon resumption in the All Aged Stakes behind Giga Kick, who we saw win again last weekend, and he had to win ugly in the Hollindale Stakes two weeks ago after enduring a wide run in transit. Drawing awkwardly in gate 11 is the only concern, and as an eight-year-old he’s not getting any younger either.

Zaaki will press forward from out wide. His stablemate Numerian is the only other speed horse engaged in the race, and is absolutely flying for Annabel Neasham.

Numerian hasn’t won a race this season, but has finished second to Cascadian twice at WFA, run second in a Chelmsford to Knight’s Order, and been beaten a length in the Caulfield Cup. He was far from disgraced behind Dubai Honour and Anamoe last time out, and richly deserves a win. He’ll have to beat a star to do so, but if Zaaki is off this game, then this guy is the one to beat.

There are a good handful of other chances in the race.

Huetor and Zeyrek were only half a length behind Zaaki in the Hollindale, but we must concede they had more favours in the run than he did.

Huetor won the Doomben Cup last year, defeating Zaaki, and he does look to be peaking for this race once again, given how stylishly he finished off in that Hollindale. Zeyrek is having a great campaign, but he was three lengths behind Numerian in the Queen Elizabeth, which helps us draw a line on the form.

Nonconformist does have the class on his day, and it’s worth remembering he did beat Zaaki home over 2000m at Caulfield back in 2021, but he’s not always the easiest to trust.

Duais is an interesting mare, striking this race first-up. She didn’t fire a shot in the spring, after a sensational autumn carnival last year. Is it possible she is an autumn/winter horse? Since 2021, her record at this time of year is 7: 5-1-0, while her spring record is 11: 1-1-1.

Atishu was plain in the Hollindale after her stunning win in the Queen of the Turf, but gets a second chance given her previous form has been very good for some time now.

The Chris Waller three-year-old Kovalica is the x-factor of the race, after he was scratched from the Rough Habit last week. Any setback isn’t great, especially when taking on a field of this quality as a younger horse, but we have to trust that the stable have him right.

The other runners don’t have the WFA credentials of the horses listed above, but can still provide stiff competition. Palmetto is the pick of these, still improving as a four-year-old, coming off two strong wins, and will get the box seat run from a lovely draw. He does still have to prove he can run 2000m though, given he was beaten a long way in his two previous starts at the distance.

The Roses - 2000m, Doomben R9

THE ROSES

The Doomben Roses is the key lead-up to the Queensland Oaks in a fortnight’s time, and we get to see which fillies are going to put their hand up as we head toward the Group 1.

Renaissance Woman is the favourite after she swept to an impressive victory in the Gold Coast Bracelet over 1800m. The Bjorn Baker filly was given a good grounding in the spring, racing at the top level in the Flight Stakes, Spring Champion and VRC Oaks, so it’s clear the stable have always had a high opinion of her. The manner of her Bracelet win says she looks to be fulfilling that promise now, but barrier one could prove to be more curse than blessing here.

It’s hard to think anything from the Bracelet can turn the tables on Renaissance Woman given even luck, but Super Chilled was second for Chris Waller there, and now gains James McDonald.

Fireburn has the best Group 1 credentials in the race, thanks to her sparkling two-year-old career, but she is yet to win from eight starts as a three-year-old. In fact, she has only placed once, but does have four top five finishes at Group 1 level in that time. She’s not racing poorly, but just doesn’t ever look like winning. This is her D-day.

Premise kicked off her campaign in a Goulburn maiden back in February, and picked off a couple of low-grade races before placing in both the Adrian Knox and ATC Oaks on wet ground. She was beaten the best part of five lengths in both races, but has to be in the conversation somewhere if she has held her form.

Starliner and Reo bring winning country form from New South Wales and Victoria respectively, to see if they can measure up. Proscenium Arch will serve as a test case for the Adelaide form in Brisbane, given her fifth placing in the Australasian Oaks, beaten two lengths. She should get a good run in the race, to help us see where things stand from that regard.

BRC Sprint - 1350m, Doomben R8

A field of extraordinary depth has been assembled for this Group 3 over 1350m. The field is set at a maximum of 16 runners, but all five emergencies would be well worth an each-way ticket if they were able to gain a start.

Cardinal Gem is the favourite, a 1400m specialist down in Victoria, and like many in this field is intent on a Stradbroke Handicap path. He’s won the last four times he has stepped out on ground that’s been either genuinely wet or just with the cut out, three of them at black type level. He’s been lumped with the visitor’s draw though, and will jump from the widest barrier.

Bacchanalia, like Cardinal Gem, is a four-year-old that seems to be getting better, but unlike that galloper he might prefer a good deck. His fighting second to Think About It at Gosford should be good enough form to compete well here, but he is racing beyond 1200m for the first time, which is a query.

Coal Crusher is racing in great heart, loves 1400m, handles all conditions, and crossed the line right alongside Bacchanalia in the McCarten Stakes earlier this prep. He meets that horse better at the weights here, and will give a good sight from a cosy draw.

Bacchanalia and Coal Crusher will have the company of Scallopini up on the speed. The rising nine-year-old is racing in career best form, and has won four of his last five 1400m starts , carrying 60kg’s (as he does here) at his last two. He’ll be awfully tough to get past again.

What to make of Dark Destroyer as the interesting runner? The Kiwi visitor ran so well in the Queensland this time last year, second in the Queensland Guineas and winning the Rough Habit, before going down just over a length in the Derby. He only had one start in the spring, winning a Group 1 in New Zealand at 1400m, and is now first-up here. He’s a big watch.

The chances certainly don’t end there, and you’d want to be wide in the quaddie, but with some genuine speed horses engaged they should run along at a clip to give every horse their chance.
