MOIR STAKES - 1000m, Moonee Valley R7

The speedsters are going to scorch the Moonee Valley turf in this edition of the Moir Stakes, let by hot favourite Imperatriz coming off a course record last start at the track and distance, when winning the McEwen Stakes.

It’s impossible to tip against the star New Zealand mare, especially given that the last time we saw her before that McEwen was also here at the Valley, where she took out the William Reid over Group 1 winners Bella Nipotina and Roch ‘N’ Horse. She has won 14 of her 20 starts, five of them at the highest level.

Imperatriz has drawn to stalk the hot speed, to be set by Acromantula and Zoustyle along with Asfoora, Rothfire and Generation, and should be able to power over the top.

Rothfire is just so consistent in these sprint races. We’ll never know how good he might have been if not breaking down in the 2020 Golden Rose, but he’s been Group 1 placed four times as an older horse and is forever knocking on the door but finding one or two better.

Asfoora has always threatened to win at Group 1 level, and was scintillating first-up at Caulfield. She’s a superb 1000m-1100m sprinter that might be in for her best prep yet, but is she as dynamite second-up as she is when resuming?

Uncommon James was an outstanding winner of the Oakleigh Plate in February, and a repeat of that performance would give Imperatriz something to think about. Could he be a late-comer to the Everest party if he can secure a win here, with nothing to suggest he won’t improve again as a now five-year-old.

Acromantula will take them along but needs to find quite a bit to be competitive here. The Inferno is a difficult horse to place, but this race isn’t it. Zoustyle seems a bit long in the tooth to mix it with the best these days. Generation needs something easier but is capable of running a drum on his day.

STOCKS STAKES - 1600m, Moonee Valley R6

We have one superstar mare dominating the betting in the Moir, and another one doing so in the Stocks. It’s an appetizing card for racing fans, who are all looking forward to seeing Amelia’s Jewel again.

Amelia’s Jewel will be the shortest metropolitan runner anywhere in the country this weekend, which means she isn’t a betting proposition for most punters. She has once again drawn poorly, which wasn’t an issue for her at Flemington first-up when going back to near-last from the widest barrier, but she had a lengthy straight to work through her gears there. Now, she’ll have to do so at Moonee Valley, a circuit she is seeing for the first time.

It’s a handy field that she’ll have to round up, but who among them can test her?

Deny Knowledge and Pride of Jenni are the likely leaders, especially if the latter can jump cleanly. Both are capable mares on their day, and are accustomed to pinching races from the front.

Steinem is an interesting proposition – she got beaten 1.5 lengths by Amelia’s Jewel back in December, and now meets her 6.5kg’s better for the experience. She has proven her class at WFA by winning the Peter Young earlier this year, but is coming off a plain first-up run in the Memsie.

Seonee just keeps winning for Patrick Payne, will get every favour with a box seat run, and we get to see where she measures up now.

Papillon Club has put in two pleasing runs this campaign, and won a Group race over 1600m at the Valley against her fellow three-year-old fillies last season. She’s ready to win the right race, if they can place her perfectly, but it’s unlikely to be one with Amelia’s Jewel in it.

Affaire A Suivre resumes after a preparation that saw her take out the Australasian Oaks, so is an interesting runner from that perspective.

STUTT STAKES - 1600m, Moonee Valley R5

The Stutt Stakes is usually the B-form when it comes to the Caulfield Guineas lead-ups, and based on the field assembled on Friday it’s likely to be the same again this year.

Griff is the favourite, and entitled to be. So often the Sydney form proves too strong when it comes to Melbourne, and he was an example of that in the Exford Plate last start. Prior to that win, he had put in two runs behind Tiz Invincible and Tom Kitten at Rosehill that were better than they looked on paper. He’ll have to tick the 1600m box, which creates a query, but there’s no reason he shouldn’t be seen as the one to beat.

King of Fighters is still a maiden, and didn’t jump cleanly behind Griff at Flemington in the Exford Plate, but some might argue he was unlucky enough that he could have won that race with clear running. The two of them are hard to split.

Verdad won his maiden by the best part of four lengths, and steps straight up to Group 2 level now. The jury is still out on the strength of that maiden win, but things can change quickly at this time of year for three-year-old’s, they can improve rapidly in a short space of time.

Autumn Angel is the sole filly in the field. She’s only had three starts, winning one and placing in two others, but they have been around some handy horses. More was expected of her last time, but she’s in the right stable to deliver on the early promise.
