Tattersall's Tiara - 1400m, Eagle Farm R7
The final Group 1 of the season is upon us, and we’ve been given a field worthy of the honour. You’d think every set of connections is approaching the race with a quiet confidence that they could be in the finish, with the right run.
Two fillies control the market, looking to add another Group 1 for their age group against the older horses. So far this season, the three-year-old’s have won seven Group 1s plus The Everest in Group 1 races up to 1400m.
Opal Ridge is the favourite, largely due to a friendly barrier draw of six compared to Ruthless Dame in 19. Ruthless Dame has the runs on the board this prep, having won the Sangster, run second in the Surround, and finishing an eye-catching fifth in the Stradbroke. Opal Ridge on the other hand is testing herself at the highest level for the first time, but took the track record at Scone two back, and was the victim of a poor ride last time out.
John Allen will need to give Ruthless Dame a peach of a ride from out wide, but if he can find some cover early in the race and clear running late, she’s the one to beat.
Foxy Frida is simply airborne, taking all before her at the tier below and deserving of her Group 1 shot now. Chain of Lightning has been running well without looking like winning but they still need to get the recipe right – a quiet ride over 1400m is her go. Chaillot is such a devastating fresh horse, and she was great behind Think About It in the Kingsford Smith Cup, but they might have been better waiting for this instead.
Comrade Rosa has won four of her last five, and has improved out of sight this year, but is still on the up. Palaisipan shouldn’t be forgotten either, after a typically honest run in the Stradbroke. The Waller pair of Kiku and Roots are certainly capable on their day, albeit giving the impression that a Group 1 win might just be a bridge too far.
Selections: 1.Ruthless Dame 2.Opal Ridge 3.Chain of Lightning 4.Palaisipan
