Robert Sangster Stakes: Morphettville 1200m

Race Overview

date Sat 11 May 2024
track Morphettville
distance 1200m
conditions WFA, Fillies and Mares
status Group 1
prizemoney $502,250

The Robert Sangster Stakes is one of many 1200m Group 1 races on the Australian calendar, and while there are also several Group 1’s for fillies and mares only, this is the only one at this distance range.

Being held in May, horses will often target this race if they have only had a light preparation in the Melbourne or Sydney carnivals through February, March and April. Perhaps two or three starts and a freshen up for connections eager to add a Group 1 to their mare’s CV to add value to them as a broodmare.

Black Caviar winning the Sangster in 2012 stands out as a clear highlight in the history of the race, but there have been plenty of other good ones along the way too.

Betting guide

Given this is a race at level weights for mares, with a 1.5kg allowance for fillies, our starting point always has to be the highest rated horses in the field. It will always be unlikely in a race of this nature for a major surprise to be sprung.

Bella Nipotina is the best and most consistent mare in this field. Since running fifth in this race last year, she has won one Group 1 and been placed in four others, all of which have been at WFA against the boys. She’s drawn perfectly, and there should be just enough jar out of the track for her liking.

Marabi, Passive Aggressive and Seradess will provide the speed, which should ensure a genuine tempo and allow every horse to have their chance. Ben Melham will no doubt look to have Bella Nipotina about four pairs back, and she looks an each-way special from there.

Preview & tips

Passive Aggressive is the early favourite, and who could deny the claims of a horse that has claimed Giga Kick as a scalp this preparation? The question mark for her is whether she is truly at her best at 1200m, or is 1000-1100m more her go.

The best work of Roch N Horse and September Run is usually reserved for the Flemington straight, but both have shown they are more than handy around a turn as well.

Chain of Lighting hasn’t been threatening in these races, and you wonder if she is more of a 1400m mare than pure sprinter.

Espiona is coming off a seven week freshen after her win in the Coolmore Classic during the Sydney carnival, but is another that might find 1200m too short for her liking.

Zapateo is having fantastic season for Godolphin with four wins at Group 2 and 3 level, and earns another crack at a Group 1 here. She will love any sting out of the track, but has come up with a sticky draw in a field of this quality.

Marabi is the interesting runner. Last year’s Oakleigh Plate winner has only raced once in the last 13 months. She was beaten 3.5 lengths in the Lightning Stakes there, but will be much better around a corner.

The three-year-old Ruthless Dame adds another dimension to the race, having been just shaded by Jacquinot earlier in the year, and following that up by finishing in front of In Secret at Group 1 level. She has unfortunately drawn wide again, but could be right in the thick of things if luck goes her way.
