27 APRIL 2023

You’ll sight CMR runners across four states in your form guides on Saturday. The stable is well-represented at Rosehill and Sandown, whilst a trio of quality three-year-old fillies take on the Group 1 Australasian Oaks at Morphettville. We then look to Eagle Farm, where The Fortune Teller adds a run in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas to his Guineas resume, having previously contested the Australian, Sandown and Caulfield editions.

RACE 4Vale Laurie Larmer OAM, 1400m

3. Aiming | J: Ms Carleen Hefel

Aiming will be looking to keep her undefeated record intact here, with Carleen Hefel to again take the ride. She remains at the 1400m for now, having had all the favours in her latest win, where she was able to dictate at a comfortable pace before giving a kick and holding them off in the concluding stages. From the outside gate with the light weight, we’ll again look to push forward in a similar-type field to last start, albeit she’s unlikely to get the same favours in transit this time out. On the balance and at the price, she presents as an EW bet.

DANGERS: 1. MERIDIUS, 2. CASTILLIAN, 5. TORONTO TERRIER, 6. DEEKAY

6. Field Of Flutes | J: Ms Carleen Hefel

Field of Flutes returns here a month between runs, after a disappointing first-up performance where he was not aided by being posted three-wide without cover in a small field. He was given a strong jump-out last week in preparation for this, working through the line well. His chances increase with more give in the ground, and from barrier 4, Carleen Hefel will look to park just off the pace with good speed in what is an open race. He too presents as an EW bet.

DANGERS: 3. KATSU, 1. FASUTO, 9. SOUTH OF HOUSTON, 7. PRIVATE JUMBO

RACE 8VRC St Leger, 3000m

8. Musgrave | J: Beau Mertens

Musgrave steps out in the VRC St Leger over 3000m, with Beau Mertens to ride. With these three-year-olds largely untested at the trip, there’s unlikely to be much pace with Highland Hill likely to take up the running. From the tricky gate, we’ll be looking to take up a forward position with cover. He’s fit and well with the trip being the main question mark here, as it is for most of the field.

DANGERS: 1. MIDNIGHT GLOW, 3. HIGHLAND HILL, 5. ROARING ENGINE, 12. WINNING BID

RACE 1ATC Bookmakers Recognition Day Handicap, 1100m

4. Tumbling | J: Regan Bayliss

Tumbling returns here after a quick freshen following the Group 3 Kindergarten, in what was a tough run on the heavy going in only his second race start. In a race with not a lot of speed, we see Sovereign Fund and Dipsy Doodle being positive from the gates, with our boy ridden where he’s comfortable. In not an overly deep race, he presents as a solid top three chance.

DANGERS: 1. SOVEREIGN FUND, 11. DIPSY DOODLE, 9. RAVENCLAW

RACE 4Alan Davidson Handicap, 1200m

16. Valiancy | J: Jason Collett

Having elected to run here instead of Sandown, Valiancy will look to continue her great form, having won three on the bounce and not missing a place in her five race starts. She worked sharply on the Ballarat course proper last week, giving us the confidence to send her north for this next assignment. From barrier 14, we’ll look to slot in behind the on-pace runners, with the majority of speed coming from the outside gates. It’s difficult to line up the form lines here, but without any standouts, it’s hard to argue she isn’t a good top-three chance.

DANGERS: 10. FLAG OF HONOUR, 14. LAVISH EMPIRE, 12. MIRRA VIEW

RACE 8NSW Bookmakers Co-op Handicap, 1300m

10. Sonora | J: Dylan Gibbons

Sonora returns here two months between runs with a nice trial in between, after a disappointing last start performance where she raced a tad flat. Allotted with the 57kgs after Dylan Gibbons’ claim, we’ll look to be positive, taking advantage of the gate. We see Short Shorts and Riduna taking up the lead, with Sonora sitting just off the pair. With the blinkers reapplied, we see her running well here, presenting as a good EW bet.

RACE 9Grand Syndicates Australasian Oaks, 2000m

6. Affaire A Suivre | J: John Allen

Affaire A Suivre continues her fantastic first preparation here in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks off the back of a couple of impressive wins, the latest of which was the Port Adelaide Guineas under Johnny Allen, who again takes the ride today. From the carpark, we’ll look to take a sit midfield with cover. She’s fit, well and the 2000m likely to be run at a genuine tempo is ideal. We’ll need a few things to go our way, but we’re as confident as any heading into this.

7. Running On Time | J: Damien Oliver

Running On Time ran to within 1.4L of Affaire A Suivre in the Port Adelaide Guineas. She sat on the pace that day, giving a kick on the turn and looking the winner at a few stages in the straight before having the stablemate wear her down in the final 100m, having had the more efficient run in transit. From barrier 9, D.Oliver will look to have her positive, somewhere just off the speed. Having run the 2000m out before, we’re confident she’ll be in this for a long way.

3. Jennilala | J: Declan Bates

Jennilala comes through the other feature race that day, taking out the Group 3 Auraria Stakes. In a race run at a brutal tempo, Declan Bates, who retains the ride here, was able to have her jump and relax at the tail of the field. She worked into the race on the turn, finishing with the best last 800m of the race, giving us every indication she can sustain a run needed to compete at Group 1 level over the 2000m. From the favourable gate, there’s no reason she can’t be fighting out the finish.

2. The Fortune Teller | J: Ben Melham

The Fortune Teller was scratched last weekend from the Hawkesbury Guineas, citing the tricky barrier and the less-than-ideal trip, so he now heads north to tackle the Queensland Guineas after a gutsy win in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes. Ben Melham heads up to take the ride, and from barrier 3, will look to be positive. His chances improve with any rainfall, but he certainly has the class to win here.
