5. Scentify | J: Ben AllenScentify is a first starter out of Justify, with Ben Allen to ride. He has shown nice speed in his jump outs with blinkers applied, which go on again here. Worked well on the course proper at Ballarat on Saturday in preparation for this, and from the outside gate, he will likely push forward to sit on the speed. With no clear line of sight on much of the field, and with a big day ahead, this is one we’re happy to just watch and cheer.

4. Khor | J: John AllenAnother first starter here, in Khor. Johnny Allen will take the ride, donning a set of silks synonymous with this carnival. Khor was stoked up in his most recent jump out a fortnight back, hitting the line nicely. With not a lot of speed predicted here, Johnny will look to give him a squeeze and have him not too far off the pace. This presents as another learning opportunity, rather than betting.

3. Roland Garros | J: William MccarthyRoland Garros returns here after two steeple trials, with Will McCarthy to ride having partnered him on both of those occasions, and having won on him previously. He’s a free rolling, front running type who can certainly win this, though the price looks a tad thin to bet at this stage.

10. Shearman Dyer | J: John AllenShearman Dyer drops 10kgs(!) and steps up to the 1700m after having hit the line nicely following an awkward run in transit last start. Johnny Allen goes on, and from barrier 5, we’ll look to ride him where he’s comfortable, likely to be midfield in a nice rhythm. In a maiden void of much depth, he presents as an EW bet at the current quote.

15. The High Priestess | J: Ben AllenThe High Priestess returns here second up, almost a month between runs, and stepping up to the 1700m following a relatively one-paced performance last start. The fact it was her first run in Australia, over the less-than-ideal trip of 1400m, and that she was seen to be doing her best work late seems to have resonated with the market here. From barrier 3, she will need a good ride from Ben Allen who will look to have her comfortable in the run with room on the turn to allow her to work through her gears. Could very well win this but seems a tad short to be playing here.

1. Saunter Boy | J: Steven PatemanThe stable favourite Saunter Boy has returned in great order. Despite being beaten by Blandford Lad, who he again meets here today, the market has sided with us at the time of writing, presumably citing the additional impost he carried on that occasion. Stevie Pateman continues the formidable partnership here and having dispatched of this like-field in the lead-up race, we see no reason to doubt him winning this.

3. Senegalia | J: Ben MelhamSenegalia returns here over a month between runs, with Ben Melham to ride. We were pleased with her first up run against some quality opposition, running to within 1.5 lengths of Veranskova. We will monitor the track and withdraw her if it gets too wet. From barrier 7 prior to scratchings, we’ll look to be positive from the gates, sitting in the first four. Has the ability to win this.

4. Stay In Touch | J: John AllenStay In Touch returns to the races over the 1000m after a couple of jump outs, having started each of her nine career runs over said trip. She has first-up form and can handle the heavy going. Despite the tricky gate, she presents as an EW betting prospect.

Field Of Flutes | J: Ms Linda MeechField of Flutes returns here a month between runs after a disappointing first-up performance, not aided by being posted three-wide without cover in a small field. He was scratched from the weekend and given a strong jump-out in preparation for this, working through the line well. His chances increase with more give in the ground, and from barrier 3, Linda Meech will look to be positive, giving them something to chase in the straight.

1. Accuse | J: Ben AllenAccuse returns a month between runs, but with an exploratory hurdle trial in between. For now, we’ve deemed him more suited to the flat going and back in trip, though the 62kgs and wide gate make this race difficult to approach with any confidence from a betting perspective.

1. Flash Flood | J: Ms Carleen HefelFlash Flood continues his prep stepping back out over the 1400m, having had success at this trip and carnival last year. The in-form Carleen Hefel retains the ride. Despite beginning awkwardly last start, he picked up nicely in the straight hitting the line well in a very fast-run race, suiting the backmarkers and eventual winner, going down a half-length. He’ll likely need luck from the gate upon straightening but presents as a good EW bet.

2. Montather | J: Ben AllenMontather returns here second up but given time between runs, stepping up to the 1400m with Ben Allen to ride. In a race with genuine speed on paper and from the nice gate, we hope to have him parked where he’s comfortable. Ben will need to get to the best part of the track to give him a crack at them late. We see him as an EW betting prospect at the price.

12. Zoukerette | J: Jason CollettZoukarette returns here second up with Jason Collett to ride. The form out of that prior start appears to be quite strong and with this looking to be void of similar depth, the market has afforded her due respect. She worked well on Friday in preparation for this, and we expect her to be fighting out the finish.

5. Lalaguna | J: Tim ClarkLalaguna was entered to run at Goulburn on Sunday, before the meeting was called off. On face value, she’s an eleven-start maiden with a handful of credible runs to her name. She’s not a horse with a great turn of foot, so we’ll look to roll forward with blinkers applied, especially with Tim Clark aboard from barrier 3. We’ll look to give the favourite something to run down in the straight and hopefully be thereabouts in the finish.

12. Glowing Gold | J: Mitchell BellWe elected to run Glowing Gold here instead of Newcastle on Thursday, citing the big weight and tricky barrier there. Off a strong tempo last start and having been inconvenienced by the eventual winner on the turn, she tired late to battle home only fairly. She will have taken plenty from that, and with the blinkers back on, we expect a marked improvement with a good run trailing the speed.

11. Bat Out Of Hell | J: Jason CollettBat Out Of Hell is first-up after settling in nicely since joining the stable. He worked sharply on Saturday following just the one trial, pulling up clean in the wind, suggesting he is forward enough to perform well here. The 1100m will be a nice starting point, with a win at the trip first up previously boding well. We're taking the blinkers off here, and from barrier 7, Jason Collett will look to sit off the pace and we hope to see him fighting out the finish.
